Brian Dexter

“I love my C-Leg®. It always knows what to do and when to do it.”

Life as he knew it abruptly changed for Brian Dexter a New Hampshire sawmill worker on the morning of June 27, 2000.   While adjusting the guides on a four-foot circular saw at his workplace, Brian was accidentally pushed by another piece of machinery into the saw and his left leg was severed above the knee.

Just 26-years old at the time and determined to be in control of his future, Brian refused to let the traumatic injury that nearly took his life keep him down. He managed to leave the hospital a mere four days after he was admitted and was walking on his first prostheses two months later.

Brian says his life changed once again the following summer when he was fitted with Otto Bock HealthCare’s computer-controlled C-Leg®. “With the C-Leg®, I was right back to being the outdoorsman I was before my accident. I hike, race dirt bikes, ride my four-wheeler, and I drive a loader for over ten hours a day.”

The biggest challenge Brian now faces is one many new parents can relate to – keeping up with an active 3-year-old son. He says thanks to the C-Leg®, he has no problem dealing with the demands of fatherhood.

“It’s important to me to be able to carry my son and even walk down stairs while holding him.  It’s good to know I can trust the C-Leg® to do its job so I can do the most important job of my life.”

The C-Leg® is revolutionary technology using on-board sensors and microprocessors to anticipate and adapt to a person's movement 50 times per second. The C-Leg® immediately adjusts to changes in walking speed and direction and provides crucial knee stability the moment it is needed. These features allow Brian to walk down stairs and ramps and maneuver rough terrain without the fear of falling.
