Rayna Dubose
"My goals haven’t changed. Everything is the same about me.... I want to get back to school, graduate and play basketball."
Less than a year ago, 19-year old Virginia Tech student, Rayna DuBose, found herself in a battle for her life after contracting the deadly bacterial infection, meningococcal meningitis. Rayna was able to survive a heart attack, collapsed lungs, liver failure and a coma. But she lost both arms four inches below her elbows and both legs six inches below her knees to the disease.
For the former high school basketball star attending VT on an athletic scholarship, it meant a sudden disruption to a bright future. But this determined teen considers being sidelined only a temporary change in plans. Though her amputations were just performed in May 2002, Rayna is already learning to not just walk, but run on her new prostheses. And she's already informed her coach she plans to play again for Virginia Tech.
Can she do it? The college recently informed Rayna her scholarship will continue in full, and the U.S. Basketball Writer's Association is presenting her its "Most Courageous Award" at the NCAA Final Four in April. It seems no one is counting her out.
