PAULA

The new software PAULA by Otto Bock is an abbreviation for Prosthetist’s Assistant for Upper Limb Architecture. This software assists certified prosthetists during planning, designing and manufacturing of upper extremities prostheses. It can be used for both myoelectric and body-powered prostheses for all levels of amputation as well as for cosmetic or passive fittings. PAULA is a powerful tool for selecting the right components and delivering superb fit.

Idea

The demand for better adaptability to individual patient needs has increased considerably the variety of available components as well as the complexity of modern upper limb prostheses.  Otto Bock offers many components and different programs for myoelectric, body-powered and hybrid prostheses as well as cosmetic fittings. This vast array needs a lot of knowledge and experience.

The fabrication of prostheses requires the consideration of many patient related influencing factors (size selection, myosignal quality, etc.) as well as knowledge of technical details (e.g. component sizes, compatibility of various components, and available control options). Simultaneously, the usability and acceptance of prostheses not only depend on the selection of the proper components and their optimal adjustment: the correct fit of the socket also plays a crucial role.

PAULA addresses all these issues. It handles the complexity of components for the upper extremity prostheses and provides an E-learning platform for the whole MYOBOCK® system of Otto Bock. Additionally, the new software guides prosthetists through the fitting and selection process to ensure component compatibility and excellent patient fit.

Description of the product

PAULA is a comprehensive software package providing essential support for the fabrication of upper limb prostheses. Thanks to the integration into the Otto Bock DataStation, a common platform has been created, offering the prosthetist a familiar user interface. PAULA incorporates information from different Otto Bock software applications to simplify and support upper extremity prosthesis design.

These five applications are:

Folder with documents.

Patient Management

Comprehensive documentation is required, especially for justification of a new or follow-up fitting to the reimbursement party. This work takes a great deal of time.

Myo-Test

With PAULA the patient may quickly and effectively learn targeted contraction of individual muscle groups by training, which will be documented.

Socket Design

Through a photometric process, PAULA creates a test socket according to the patient’s data, whose 3D-model is the basis for the following milling model.

Ordering

PAULA transfers the patient data and the selected components in an order form, which can be directly sent by the prosthetist to Otto Bock via email.
