The Breathable Back by Otto Bock Healthcare is the first rigid back system combining Brock Foam and a three-dimensional spacer fabric cover to achieve airflow through the cushion, heat disbursement, and moisture evaporation. The result is a product that addresses the problems of heat and skin breakdown that accompany long-term wheelchair sitting.

The Breathable Back comprises Brock Foam as its cushioning base. Brock Foam uses a patented process that fuses closed cell foam beads only at their contact points. Brock Foam actively circulates air in three dimensions, and its porosity cannot be blocked by the body or by a plastic shell. The cooling effect of this air circulation is amplified by the Foam's ability to speed up moisture evaporation: as the body sweats, the sweat coats the beads and the air circulation accelerates evaporation, body cooling and drying.
Surrounding the Brock Foam on the Otto Bock Breathable Back is a three-dimensional spacer fabric cover. The cover further serves to provide a cooling environment for the wheelchair user, ultimately helping to avoid the heat and moisture build-up that can contribute to skin breakdown.
The Results
Independent lab testing of the Breathable Back determined three key characteristics of the product:
