Isolated quadriceps weakness

Quadriceps weakness can be caused by various injuries to the knee or hips, acquired myopathies (diseases that affect muscle tissue) such as Lyme disease and poliomyelitis, inherited myopathies such as certain muscular dystrophies and stroke, or neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis or Bell’s palsy. An illness or injury that results in prolonged bed rest may cause disuse atrophy of the quadriceps muscles.

Progressive quadriceps weakness can make almost all of your daily activities more difficult: standing up, sitting down, getting into and out of a car, and climbing stairs. Weak quadriceps can affect your gait (walking) and balance and make you more vulnerable to falls.

Diagnosis

Typically, your physician or physical therapist will confirm quadriceps weakness and assess or grade the extent of the weakness by conducting a series of muscle strength tests.

Treatment

Most acute cases of quadriceps weakness can be effectively addressed with physical therapy and by incorporating cardiovascular and strengthening exercises into your daily routine. Individuals with chronic conditions that result in quadriceps weakness may also benefit from the addition of a leg orthosis.

Orthotic management
